Obituary of Catherine Manos
1924 - 2020
Catherine Manos, age 96, passed away peacefully in Brooklyn, New York on April 4, 2020.
Catherine was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on January 21, 1924, daughter of the late Vasilios and
Evangelina Policandritis of Crete, Greece and Central Valley, NY. She grew up in Hells Kitchen, NY with
her sister, Mary Forakis who passed away on March 18, 2020 at age 98 and her brother, Emanuel Poulos
who passed away in 2016 at age 85.
Catherine graduated with honors from Textile HS in New York, but her sister convinced her not to
become a seamstress. Instead during WW II, she was one of the first women to work at Merrill Lynch,
assisting on a trading desk. She continued to work there until her children were born. As a homemaker,
she loved to cook and sew outfits for her twin daughters. She was also very active with Kimisis
Theotokou church, and was a member and Treasurer of the Philoptochos Society for over 50 years. She
worked hard every year to make the annual Philoptochos fundraiser luncheon a success.
Catherine was married for over 30 years to Manouel Manos who passed away in 1979. Later, she
married Aristide Paraskos who passed away in 1990. When Catherine was 75, James Zafirides swept her
off her feet and they were very happily married until he passed away in 2006. She enjoyed her travels
with James, especially their annual trips to the island of Kauai and their winters in Boca Raton.
Catherine was predeceased by her daughter, Valerie Sofia, her nieces Tina Manos and Elaine Likakis,
and her nephew, Andrew Manos. She is survived by her son, John Manos and her daughter, Alice
Manos; son-in-law Sal Sofia; grandsons Christopher Manos and Philip Sofia and their spouses Kelly and
and Geraldine; great-grandchildren Andrew Manos, Samantha Manos and Eliana Sofia; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Everyone remembers Catherine for her endless smile and upbeat attitude. She loved her family, her
friends and the Kimisis Theotokou church. She especially enjoyed her great-grandchildren who always
found laughter and a warm spot on her lap.
Graveside services will be held on April 8, 2020 at Greenwood Cemetery for the immediate family.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, Kimisis Theotokou church,
224-18th Street, Brooklyn NY 11215.

I am so sad as I write here on this Good Friday. First my beloved Mom, then my beloved Aunt Mary, and now it feels like I've lost yet another Mom. My beloved Aunt Catherine. What an absolute sweetheart! So very warm and loving. She was such a Blessing! I'm going to miss her greatly. She provided me with gentleman cousin Johnny, whom I've always looked-up to as a big brother, and my gorgeous and funny twin cousins: Alice and Valerie. While married to the genius, Uncle Manny! I will never forget that week in February 1969, (during a bad blizzard) my sisters and I were very young as we stayed with Aunt Catherine and her family. We had such a fun time! I remember Aunt Catherine getting me to finish eating my Rice Krispies because I couldn't stop running around their living room! ((LOL!)) We loved listening to their jukebox they had in the basement. I was so fascinated with it! (I hope I didn't break it!) I will miss Aunt Catherine's smile, but even more, I'll miss her Laugh. I loved the way she laughed! I loved the sound of it. It always gave me the re-assuring feeling that "ALL is well". And I truly feel she is saying that to all of us right now, "ALL is well." Thank God for the Resurrection!
