Obituary for Jean Walsh-MacCormack (Walsh)

Jean Bernadette (Walsh) MacCormack, 87 was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 28, 1936, and
peacefully passed away surrounded by family on October 21, 2023, in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
Jean is the daughter of the late Joseph Walsh and Frances (Taaffe) Walsh and was the eldest of five
daughters. She was raised in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, where she met her future husband, the
late David M. MacCormack. Together they raised four children, and today she is survived by 10
grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
After high school Jean worked for Merrill Lynch in Manhattan, and after marriage became a full-time
homemaker raising her children, in the Eltingville section of Staten Island. She was a devoted and loving
mother. The doorbell was very popular at their Seidman Avenue home, as neighborhood kids loved
playing there because a lot of fun was tolerated! She was highly active as a Den Mother in the Cub
Eventually the family moved to Rockville, MD., outside of Washington, DC. There Jean took a job as a
Bank Teller and eventually became a respected Branch Manager and Commercial Lender. She met and
touched the lives of countless people, many who became life-long friends and helped others start and
advance their own careers in banking. She was a favorite of many bank customers.
Jean was known throughout her life for her sharp wit, and people loved to be around her because she
had the gift of making people laugh.
After retiring she moved to Philadelphia, PA where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law, and
their two sons. She was active in the local Church, and being a ferocious reader, she was also active in
the local Library. She enjoyed gaming (to the surprise and joy of her grandchildren), watching movies,
cooking shows, occasional trips to the Casino with her daughter and sisters where she sometimes got
lucky! But mostly, she enjoyed being with her family, and it was the greatest gift she could have given
Jean truly relished time spent with each of her children, grandchildren, and sisters. Her love was
boundless and unconditional for all. She is going to be missed by each of them. Although she moved
from Brooklyn and Staten Island, she never lost her love from where she started. She returned often to
her roots managing to sneak in an order of clams oreganata from one of the good Italian restaurants in
Bay Ridge.
Jean is survived by her sisters, Marguerite Moore and Kathleen Smorto (husband Jim), of Brooklyn. Her
children, Michael MacCormack (wife Christy) of Bethesda, MD; Martin MacCormack of Manhattan; Mary
Frances Suter (husband Bob) of Mountain Top, PA; and Margaret McCormack (husband Eric) of San
Francisco, CA. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, and great-grandson.
