Obituary for John P. Hennigan
John “Jack” Hennigan
October 2, 1947- April 2, 2020
Jack Hennigan, beloved and devoted husband of Christine, left this earth on April 2, 2020. His love, courage, wisdom, strength, kindness, and humor will live forever in all who were lucky enough to know him. Born and raised in Brooklyn, the son of Bridget (Halligan) and Patrick, who hailed from counties Meath and Mayo, Ireland, Jack enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War. He later retired from the NYPD and spent the rest of his life serving everyone he knew. Jack was the unofficial Mayor of 63rd Street. He is survived by his love of over fifty years, Christine (Johnston), their incredibly proud children Christopher (Detective 1st Grade Retired NYPD), Karen (Lt Col, USAF), and Kevin (Lt, FDNY), his beloved daughter-in-law Gina (Maiello), and the apples of his eye, his amazing grandchildren Kaila, Jack and Anthony (to whom he is affectionately known as “Johnny Boy”). Jack is also survived by adoring siblings Jane Hennigan, Mary Moran, Loretta Canavan, Thomas (Brian) Hennigan, Margaret Napolitano, loving in-laws Caroline and John Donahue, Mary Sandstrom Hennigan, Maureen Mason and Margaret Johnston. He was Uncle Jack, Uncle Jackie, and UJ to dozens of lucky nieces and nephews, some by blood and many by choice, each of whom was his favorite. Jack was a kind friend to every person he ever met no matter who they were or where they came from. He had an incredibly quick wit, a kind heart, and he was infinitely generous in time and in spirit. If you needed something, Jack would get it to you. May his kind and generous spirit help buoy us all until we can meet again in person to celebrate his extraordinary life. A mass was offered for the repose of Jack’s soul by Fr. John McGowan, CSSR on April 3, 2020.
The Hennigan family will welcome those who loved Jack to a celebration of his life sometime in the future, when we are all able to hug one another again. Until then, we will try to make our Johnny Boy proud, and we hope you will hold Jack in your hearts as he is forever in ours.
