Obituary for Mary Coughlan (Sullivan)

Coughlan, Mary (nee Sullivan) died at her home, at the age of 84 years old, on February 23rd, 2021 surrounded by family. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 23, 1936, to Hannah and Mortimer Sullivan. She met her husband of 53 years, John Coughlan, at Gaelic Park in the Bronx, and they were married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn on July 5, 1958. For the next forty years, they resided on the 500 block of 58th Street in Brooklyn where they raised their nine children and she was known as Mrs. C to the neighborhood children. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, her brothers Dan and John, and her sister Anne. She is survived by her children John (Virginia), Frances DeLaurentis (AJ), Mary Lavelle (John), Kevin (Celie), Teresa Petrocelli (Gerard), Gerard (the late Deborah), Brian (Trish), Dennis (Kathy) and Jim (Linda), her twenty-five grandchildren, one great grandchild, her sister, Peggy Brennan, and many nieces and nephews. As her children reached school age, Mary returned to work outside of the home and became the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent at Madison Square Garden. She was a lifetime knitter, who also loved to crochet, sew and do needlepoint. She loved her family, cared deeply for her friends and the friends of her children whom she often welcomed into her home, and had a deep and abiding faith. She was a devout parishioner of OLPH for many years, where she was a Eucharistic Minister, organizer of many fund-raising events and instrumental in the creation of the OLPH Soccer League. In later years, she spent time living in the Poconos, New Jersey and Florida. She will be missed by all, but her legacy will live on in the family she raised and those she touched. She will be remembered by all as a dessert enthusiast, her favorite part of any meal. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you please donate to a charity of your choice in memory of her. Reposing at McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home, 9620 3rd Ave, Brooklyn, NY, on Sunday, Feb. 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Monday, March 1st at 10:30 a.m. Internment, Long Island National Cemetery.
