Obituary for Roseleen Mulkerrins (McCann)

Roseleen “Bell” Mulkerrins (née McCann) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday October 24th. 2023.
Bell was born January 20, 1949 to Patrick and Ellen McCann of Aughnamadoo in county Longford Ireland. She was the 7th of 8 children and grew up happily on a farm, which she always recalled with great fondness. She graduated high school from Longford Technical School and followed most of her siblings out to America in 1966. Her early days in the U.S. were spent in Sunset Park, Brooklyn in Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish living with her dear aunt Ellie Rose Mccann. Bell worked as a corporate secretary in Manhattan. On weekends she loved attending all the Irish dances of the time. She went on to meet her late husband Michael Mulkerrins of Co Galway, whom she married in 1974. They had 2 sons and 1 daughter. They lived in Bensonhurst and eventually moved to Bay Ridge.
After the death of her husband in 1990 and with 3 young children, she was accepted into Kingsboro College’s Nursing program and earned her Nursing degree at the age of 41. She worked as a Registered Nurse in Brooklyn Methodist Hospital for 12 years and eventually getting her Masters Degree in Public Health. She transferred to nursing for the Board of Education where she worked until she retired in 2018. She loved being a nurse as it was her nature to help anyone in need.
As a single working mother she managed to provide a Catholic education for her children. She was a devout member of Our Lady of Angels Parish and a prominent figure in both the parish community as well as Bay Ridge, being a kind and friendly person always willing to help others.
Bell went back “home” to Ireland nearly every year. Sometimes more, to visit family, it was always a huge part of who she was. She had an open door policy at her home on 72nd street , all were always welcome, and though it was often crowded it was always comfortable.
She is predeceased by her husband Michael , and her brothers Patrick and Brendan . She leaves behind here on earth her children Michael (Dawn), Brian(Basi) and Ellen Hernandez (Ivan) , her grandchildren: Michael James , Rhiannon, Conner, Jolene Mulkerrins, as well as Norah , Liam , Maeve and Colin Hernandez.
