Obituary

Mary L. Halsey, nee Cox, was an esteemed professor at the New York City
College of Technology where she taught computer science and technology
programming for 22 years. “Best professor at city tech, ever! She is one of the few
who really cares about you learning the material” – said one of her students
anonymously on Rate My Professor.
She was a lifelong resident of Bay Ridge. Mary is survived by her husband of
51 years Philip, daughter Meredith, granddaughter Ashley Kelly, son-in-law Thomas
Kelly, sisters Joan Blackwell and Patricia Cox, goddaughter/niece Mary Blackwell,
and was predeceased by her parents George and Cecilia and her brother Thomas Cox.
Mary grew up in a big, traditional Irish family, of which many belonged to the
Hibernians. Her father was the first American-born aide to the Grand Marshal in the
St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Mary loved to tell stories about how her family would
vacation in Wayne, NJ, where she had the opportunity to spend precious time with her
aunts, uncles and cousins.
Her daughter and granddaughter both attended Visitation Academy, where she
served as the President of the Mother’s Club and taught computer for several years.
Mary had a close relationship with the Sisters of the Visitation and was well-respected
and loved by all.
Mary served as a great role model to her daughter and granddaughter from an
early age, becoming the officer of a corporation and later earning her master’s degree
from Iona College in her 50s. She sincerely loved teaching and helping others reach
their fullest potential.
Her greatest joy in life was her granddaughter, and she couldn’t wait to tell
everyone what theatrical production she would be performing in next. Mary loved
being involved with Fontbonne Hall Academy and Narrows Community Theater and
all the dear friends she made throughout the years.

Mary’s family is deeply saddened by the fact that she will not be able to attend
Ashley’s 2022 graduation from Boston College, where she is receiving a MS in
Healthcare Administration; but they take comfort in the fact that she will be beaming
with pride from Heaven.
Mary was a very generous, kind, and loving person who touched the lives of
many throughout her 80 years of life. To say she will be sincerely missed is an
understatement.
